July 2021 — The Challenge

Plastic Free July is a global movement encouraging people around the world to reduce their consumption of single-use plastic. What is single-use plastic? And why is it bad? The term single-use plastic refers to plastics (SUP for short) and disposable items that are used only once before being thrown away or recycled. The impact of this plastic waste on the environment and our health is global and can be drastic. Single-use plastic products are more likely to end up in our oceans than reusable options, and when you look at the list I'm about to share with you, you'll understand why. Here are 10 common SUP objects found along riverbanks and beaches (and thankfully now being addressed by the EU):

I believe it is critical that we not only understand that single-use plastic & Disposable items are bad, but also why they are bad. We all know that plastic is a nightmare for all animal species. They get tangled up, hurt themselves, or mistake it for food. For example, turtles love having a jellyfish for dinner, but can't tell the difference between a jellyfish and a discarded balloon floating in the ocean. What is also important is that plastics do not biodegrade. They slowly break down into smaller pieces of plastic called microplastics (fragments of any type of plastic less than 5 mm (0.20 inches) long). We at PURELEI will join the Plastic Free July movement and encourage our community to do the same. It is the second year in a row that we have committed ourselves, especially our reach on social media, to this cause in which we strongly believe.

Our Mauo PURELEI movement

When we talk about our sustainability measures, we often refer to our Mauo PURELEI movement: The term MAUŌ is made up of two basic words; mau, stability, uninterrupted continuity, and ō, permanently in a healthy state. It's Hawaiian for 'sustainability'.

We wanted to create a place where we can provide detailed and transparent information to anyone interested in our sustainability activities and fundraising efforts, and inspire our community to join our movement.
